Specialty insurance

Specialty Insurance for Industries Other Agencies Turn Away

Security guard companies, trucking operations and NEMT providers get turned away by agencies that only quote standard business policies. These are the accounts Tree Insurance Agency writes every week.

The short answer

What is specialty insurance?

Specialty insurance covers businesses that standard carriers decline or exclude, such as armed security companies, interstate trucking and non-emergency medical transportation. These risks go to carriers that run programs for one industry, often with state or federal filings attached. An independent agency with access to those carriers can quote them side by side.

Why most agencies turn these businesses away

A typical agency quotes through a handful of carriers that want restaurants, offices and contractors. A guard company with armed officers, a new trucking authority or a van service carrying dialysis patients falls outside every one of their appetites. The agent sends back a decline, or a quote with an exclusion that guts the coverage.

Tree Insurance Agency is independent, which means we aren’t tied to one insurance company. A captive agent can only offer their company’s policy. We work with 150+ carrier partners, including the specialty markets that run programs built for guard companies, truckers and NEMT operators, and we pick the one that fits your operation.

What specialty insurance accounts have in common

A filing or certificate stands between you and work

The PSB-05 keeps a Texas guard license active. The BMC-91 activates trucking authority. A NEMT broker won’t send trips without a certificate worded its way.

Standard policies leave gaps

Assault and battery exclusions, passenger-for-hire exclusions and missing cargo coverage show up in the fine print of policies that weren’t written for your industry.

Contracts set the limits

Property managers, freight brokers and Medicaid brokers usually require more than the state minimum, often $1 million. We quote to the contract.

Filings and forms, by what you need

Each of these is filed or issued by the insurance company or by us. You tell us what the license, authority or contract asks for, and we make sure the right form gets there.

Texas security companies

The PSB-05 (PSP-05) Certificate of Liability Insurance that keeps your DPS license active, completed at every new policy and renewal. See security guard insurance.

Georgia security agencies

The certificate of insurance the Georgia board requires for a licensed security agency, issued with your policy.

Interstate trucking (FMCSA & MOTUS)

BMC-91 or BMC-91X for liability, BMC-34 for household goods cargo and the MCS-90 endorsement, tracked until they post. See trucking filings.

Texas and Georgia-only trucking

Form E for liability and Form H for household goods cargo, filed with the TxDMV in Texas or the Department of Public Safety in Georgia.

NEMT providers

Certificates worded the way your Medicaid broker or facility contract requires, including additional insured wording. See NEMT insurance.

Drivers reinstating a license

SR-22 filings with the Texas DPS, and SR-22 or SR-22A filings with the Georgia DDS, including non-owner policies. See SR-22 insurance.

A business is hard to insure when most standard carriers won’t accept its type of risk. Common reasons are a high chance of injury claims, such as armed guards, large claim sizes, such as heavy trucks, or vulnerable passengers, such as NEMT riders. New businesses with no loss history also have fewer options. Specialty carriers price these risks instead of declining them.

Usually, because the risks are bigger and fewer carriers compete for them. Trucking premiums often run $20,000 or more per truck, while general liability for a small guard company often starts around $2,500 a year. Comparing several specialty carriers is the most reliable way to keep the price in check.

An independent agent can show you more options, which is how better rates usually happen. A captive agent quotes one company, and if that company declines your industry, there’s nothing else to offer. Tree Insurance Agency quotes through 150+ carrier partners, including specialty programs for guard companies, trucking and NEMT.

Yes. We complete the Texas DPS PSB-05 for security companies and issue the certificate the Georgia board requires. For trucking, the insurance company files the BMC-91 with the FMCSA once you bind, and we track it until it posts. For NEMT, we issue certificates with the wording your broker or facility contract requires.
