Personal insurance

Motorcycle, RV, Boat and Off-Road Vehicle Insurance

Bikes, campers, boats, side-by-sides and golf carts each need their own policy. Tree Insurance Agency quotes them with several carriers and can write them alongside your car and home.

The short answer

Do motorcycles, RVs and boats need their own insurance policy?

Usually, yes. A car policy covers the vehicles listed on it, and a homeowners policy covers little or nothing once a boat, ATV or golf cart leaves your property. Motorcycles and motorhomes need the same state minimum liability as a car. Boats, trailers and off-road vehicles need their own policy to protect the vehicle itself.

Why your car and home policies stop short

A personal auto policy covers the cars and trucks named on it. Add a motorcycle or a motorhome and the carrier rates it as its own vehicle, often on a separate policy, because the risks and repair costs are different. A homeowners policy is even narrower: most cover a boat, ATV or golf cart only in small amounts, only on your own property, or not at all.

That gap tends to show up at the worst time: a side-by-side rolls on a friend’s ranch, a boat trailer comes loose on the interstate, or a hailstorm hits the travel trailer parked beside the house. A separate policy for each toy closes it, and it usually costs less than people expect. As an independent agency, we quote the same details with several carriers and show you the differences in coverage, not just the price.

What we insure

Each of these is quoted on its own policy or added to one you already have with us, depending on the carrier.

Motorcycles and scooters

Street bikes, cruisers, touring bikes, sport bikes and scooters. Policies can cover custom parts, riding gear and a helmet, plus roadside help if you break down far from home.

Motorhomes

Class A, B and C motorhomes need liability like any car. We add collision and comprehensive, coverage for the belongings inside, and full-timer coverage if the RV is where you live.

Travel trailers and fifth wheels

Your truck’s liability usually follows a trailer you tow, but damage to the trailer itself needs its own coverage. That includes hail, theft and a collision on the road.

Boats and personal watercraft

Fishing boats, ski boats, pontoons and jet skis, including the motor, the trailer, liability on the water and towing if you lose power on the lake.

ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes

Four-wheelers, side-by-sides and dirt bikes used on trails, ranches and hunting leases, with liability for the people riding with you.

Golf carts

Carts used in neighborhoods and on community paths, including Peachtree City’s network of more than 100 miles of golf cart paths a short drive from our Fayetteville office.

Coverages worth asking about

Recreational vehicle policies use the same building blocks as car insurance: liability, collision, comprehensive and uninsured motorist. The useful differences are in the extras. These are the ones we bring up on almost every quote, because they decide what a claim actually pays.

Questions

Common questions about motorcycle, rv, boat & off-road insurance

Yes. Both states require motorcycles to carry the same minimum liability as cars. In Texas that’s 30/60/25: $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. In Georgia it’s 25/50/25. Liability only pays for damage you cause to others, so most riders add coverage for their own bike and injuries.

Partly. When you tow a trailer, the liability on your truck’s policy usually extends to it. Damage to the trailer itself, such as hail, theft, fire or a rollover, usually isn’t covered unless you add the trailer to a policy. Check your declarations page or send it to us and we’ll tell you.

Most ATVs and UTVs used on private land aren’t required to carry insurance, but that doesn’t make them safe to leave uninsured. Most homeowners policies exclude them once they leave your property, and an injured passenger or a rider on a friend’s land can lead to a large claim. A separate policy covers both the machine and your liability.

Neither Texas nor Georgia requires boat insurance for most boat owners. Marinas, storage lots and lenders usually do. Even when it’s optional, a boat policy is how you cover liability on the water, damage to the boat and motor, and the trailer it rides on.

Yes. Peachtree City requires golf carts to be registered with the city before they use its path system, and a golf cart policy covers the cart and your liability while you drive it on the paths and in your neighborhood. Many homeowners policies cover golf carts only on your own property or a golf course, so ask before you rely on yours.
