An Independent Insurance Agency That Works for You, Not a Carrier

Tree Insurance Agency has been placing personal, business and specialty coverage since 2011. We aren’t tied to one insurance company, so our job is to find the carrier that fits you.

The short answer

What is an independent insurance agency?

An independent insurance agency is licensed to sell policies from many insurance companies instead of just one. Tree Insurance Agency holds 150+ carrier partnerships, so we compare several companies’ prices and terms on your risk and recommend the one that fits. If a carrier raises your rate or drops your building at renewal, we move you to another carrier without starting over.

Who Tree Insurance Agency is

Tree Insurance Agency, LLC opened in 2011 and now runs two corporate offices: one on the Katy Freeway in Katy, Texas, and one at Trilith in Fayetteville, Georgia. We’re licensed in 10 states and hold more than 150 carrier partnerships, including over 30 auto carriers.

Our slogan is “We help you pick and choose the right carrier for you.” That sentence describes the actual work. A family in Sugar Land comparing auto rates, a guard company in Dallas that needs its PSB-05 (PSP-05) certificate on file with the Texas DPS, and a shopping center owner in Fayette County who was non-renewed over wind all get the same thing from us: several carriers’ answers on one desk, and a licensed agent who explains the differences in plain words.

We write personal auto, homeowners and life insurance; business coverage such as commercial property, general liability, workers’ comp and business owners policies; commercial auto; surety bonds; and specialty lines like security guard, trucking and NEMT. Because those policies sit in one agency, you can bundle them where the carriers allow it.

Independent insurance broker vs captive agent

Most people never hear these terms until a rate jumps. Here is the difference in plain language.

Captive agent: one company's products

A captive agent works for, or is contracted to, a single insurance company and can only sell that company’s policies. If that company raises your rate, won’t cover your roof, or stops writing your type of business, the agent has nowhere else to send you.

Independent agent: many companies' products

An independent agent, often called a broker, is appointed with many insurance companies. Tree Insurance Agency holds 150+ of those relationships. We quote your risk with several of them and show you the prices and coverage side by side.

Who the agent answers to

A captive agent’s contract and sales targets come from one carrier. An independent agent’s job is to place you well, and a client who is placed badly is a client we lose at renewal.

What happens at renewal

With a captive agent, a non-renewal usually means finding a new agent. With us, it means we shop the policy again and move it to another carrier, and you keep the same agent and the same phone number.

Hard-to-place risks

Independent agencies also reach wholesale and specialty markets that captive agents can’t use. That access is how we write $5M–$20M property, armed guards, trucking and NEMT. See our carriers for how that works.

Ten states, two local offices

Our corporate offices are in Texas and Georgia, and that’s where most of our clients live and work. We’re also licensed in Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Ohio, Virginia, New Mexico, Maryland and South Carolina, where we write mainly business and specialty coverage for clients we work with by phone and email. The full list, with what we write in each, is on States We Serve.

Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time, with after-hours appointments on request. The quickest way to reach a licensed agent in either office is our toll-free line, (888) 994-7692.

Part of A Flegeance & Associates Group

Tree Insurance Agency belongs to A Flegeance & Associates Group, a managing general agency (MGA). An MGA holds contracts with insurance companies and wholesale markets and can give other agencies access to them. The group also offers franchise and partnership options for agents who want to build their own book.

For our clients, the connection means more markets for difficult risks. For licensed agents who want those markets or a partnership, start at For Insurance Agents.

Common questions about this page

Don't see yours? Call

Usually not. Carriers set the premium, and it’s generally the same rate whether you buy through an independent agent or another channel the carrier uses. The difference is that an independent agent compares several carriers, so you see more than one price. You don’t pay Tree Insurance Agency a separate fee to shop your coverage.

In everyday use, people say broker for an agent who works with many insurance companies, and agent for someone who represents one company. The label matters less than who the person can sell for. Tree Insurance Agency is independent: we’re appointed with 150+ carriers and choose among them for each client, so no single company decides what you’re offered.

Yes, when the policies are written in the same agency. Many carriers give a multi-policy discount when your home and auto, or your business and personal lines, are placed with them together. We’ll show you the bundled price next to the best separate prices so you can see whether bundling actually saves you money.

We shop the policy again with other carriers before the non-renewal date. Send us the notice the day it arrives, because the earlier we start, the more carriers have time to quote. Since we aren’t tied to the company that dropped you, you keep the same agent and we handle the move.

No. Most of our work happens by phone, email and e-signature. Clients near the offices can meet us in person by appointment, but we place coverage for people and businesses in all 10 states where Tree Insurance Agency holds a license.
